Space is tight!

Part of the fun of this trip will be doing it in a Mazda MX5 but that is also a challenge as we have limited space, both in the boot which is about the size of two crisp boxes side by side and the cockpit, which has no door bins or space behind the seats!

Of course there is the motorbike touring trick of taking old socks, undies and tee-shirts then binning them when they are finished with.

Yesterday I fitted a boot rack to the car and we will carry a seventy litre holdall just in case we need more room. Security of the rack will be dealt with by fitting tamper proof screws and shear off security nuts, then on the bag putting a padlock through the two zip pulls and using cable ties to attach the bag to the rack.

If we park up anywhere we will put the holdall on the passenger seat or in bedrooms if we are staying in a building!  On a campsite we will simply leave it in the car.

I don't like clutter inside a car so we are using a quadlock mount for mobile phones and have similar cases, one for an apple i-phone and one for a samsung phone. The mount is just behind the gearstick so it tucks out of the way.

If it doesn't work there might be a trail of abandoned stuff across Europe!.

  1. Organised as ever and looks like a good job to me. Carrying any tools, just in case?

  2. Yes, just a few bits and pieces Pete, similar to what we have carried on bike trips in the past plus cable ties, gaffer tape and a handful of screws, nuts and bolts etc. It still feels odd not carrying a spare wheel (but we have the compressor, tyre gunk etc.)...
